This page and the others associated with it are for teachers who are participating in the project to raise lobster larvae and juveniles in the classroom.  This project is part of the NSF-supported education effort that DEI, along with the University of Maine at Machias, Maine Sea Grant, and the Washington County Community College are participating.

There are five elements associated with this project.

I. A teacher workshop at DEI on April 7th from 9AM to 1 PM where participants will learn how to raise marine algae (phytoplantkon) and brine shrimp (food for the larval and juvenile lobsters).  This training will enable teachers to show their students how to raise the lobster food in their classroom.  All culture equipment will be supplied by DEI, and this equipment can be set up in the classroom, lab, library, or wherever it is convenient for observation and care.

II. Teachers will return to DEI to obtain stage I lobster larvae sometime in late April or early May, and for the next three weeks, the larvae will grow and develop into bottom-dwelling juveniles (Stage IV individuals).

III.  Some of the surviving lobsters can continue to grow in larger aquaria in the classroom.  This can be soda bottles, 1-gallon glass jugs, 5-gallon aquaria, etc. These animals will need to be fed regularly, and their aquaria maintained.  Only one lobster should be placed into an aquarium.  The remaining lobster juveniles will be placed into "flow-through" containers of varying sizes that the teachers and students will create.  The containers will be placed into special bottom cages to be lowered into the ocean by local fishermen, who could be family members or friends of the students involved in the project.  The cages will remain on the bottom (untended) throghout the spring, summer, and early fall.  The lobsters will require no food or other maintenance during this time.

IV.  In October or early November 2012, the cages will be hauled and returned to DEI where students will collect and anlayze the research data.
